Title: Dancing In The Street At The Mardi Gras ©

Kim Anderson

During her high school years the only thing that Kim enjoyed was art. So she decided to become
an artist and in her final years of school studied art winning herself the best student award for
Applied Art. Next was Tafe where she studied Fine Art and it was here she was introduced to photography. Until now Kim only thought of photography as the happy snaps taken at random family events. By shooting with a manual camera and black and white film, Kim could see a whole new side to photography and over the year used her friends regularly for character portraits in the studio. At the end of the year Kim entered one of her photographs into an annual Christmas exhibition at the Photography Gallery of WA in Northbridge. In the second year of her course there was no structured class so Kim continued taking photographs of everything and by third year was experimenting with the negatives themselves. In her final year she showed her photographs in a group exhibition with fellow class mates as well as class exhibitions. She was also commissioned to photograph a band and a new-emerging swimsuit designer for promotional purposes.

After graduating from Fine Arts she kept on with her photography becoming a volunteer for two music webzines photographing local music events and during this time also got the privilege to photograph an international band.

Kim studied two more courses, interactive multimedia and arts administration, both of which also contained elements of photography. When the arts administration course was cancelled after its first year, leaving students stranded, Kim spent the next couple of years contemplating what to do with herself before finally deciding to study photography and learn more about it.

During these years Kim entered a competition being run by the ARIAS (Australian Record Industry Association) in conjunction with the ARIA music awards where she was one of five winners. Kim also entered a photo into the Wanneroo Agricultural Show where she won first place in her category.

From 2004 until now Kim has been studying photography at Tafe in Northbridge, Western Australia. Kim’s preferred subjects are character portraits, fashion, fine art, documentary and macro work. Her favourite photographers include Annie Liebovitz, Herb Ritts, David LaChapelle and Pierre et Gillies. She has yet to decide which area interests her the most but hopes to come to a decision during her final year.
