Western Australian based photographer, born England 1954, arrived in Australia 1968. Photographic training in Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and Design, England 1975 - 1977. First solo exhibition in 1982 and to the present date there has been nearly twenty solo exhibitions of my work. The involvement in group exhibitions have been very numerous; these include ‘Destination China’ 1984 held at the Guangdong academy of Fine art in China, this also included a six week artist in residence that I was part of at the academy. Other group exhibitions include ‘The Commonwealth Photographic Exhibition’ in 1987 held in London, Vancouver and New Delhi, ‘Western Australian Photographers’ in 1996 at the Mead gallery at Warwick University UK and the ‘Dance People Dance’ exhibition at the Australian National Library in 1997.

My work is in the following collections: ‘The Australian collection’ at the Australian National Library in Canberra (www.nla.com.au/stephensmith), Art Gallery of Western Australia, Artbank, National Gallery of Victoria, The City of Perth collection, The Holmes-a –Court collection and other smaller public and private collections.

The photographic work that I have been involved in encompass a wide range of subjects and individual directions, from social documentation, the performing arts, colour for colours sake, fine art black and white, to installation work using the photograph as a the medium. I am currently working on a major photographic project on a disused industrial railway site and completing a double degree in Cultural Heritage and History at Curtin University, Western Australia.
