Capturing Fire: A Photographic Search for Beauty and Meaning

My love of the photograph was born of fascination with those solemn portraits that lurked the walls of 1950's mid western American homes, resplendent in their oval frames of gold leaf and bulging glass. It was nourished by those jounalistic capture - of - the - moment photos that were the hallmark of picture publications such as Look Magazine and The Saturday Evening Post. It came of age in a spare residential bathroom when a friend showed me how to make contact prints by turning on the light to expose the paper. We then processed the latent image in an assortment of conscripted kitchenware with mysterious solutions mixed up in a plastic pitcher.

For me, going digital was an act of rebellion, slipping the collar to venture off into a digital dawn of hazy definitions and delicious colors. Best of all, I didn't have to sit in the darkroom, watching the luminous hands of a timer crawl slowly around a dial. I remember the joy, the inner peace, the blessing of knowing, as I watched my first good image emerge from the womb of a whirling printer, an image captured minutes before. I realized this was for real and it was now and all I had to do was do it. I've been courting the medium ever since and it gets better every day as the wizards of technology present their gifts to this burgeoning babe.

As for my work flow, I begin with abandon, capture hundreds of photos, always hunting the unguarded expression, the introspective moment, the spark of beauty. The images are digitally edited, abstractged, simplified, enhanced....pretty much the standard techniques of visual artists. Finally, I adjust the colors until the images begin to glow, radiating their peculiar fire, illuminating the deep beauty within our existance

These images are proofed, then printed on a Epson 4000 ink jet using pigment inks and fine art paper. The prints are allowed to dry thoroughly and then coated with lacquer. This process yeilds a brilliant and durable image with exceptional resistance to fading over time.
